While fandom’s getting ready for one of the biggest media-geeky explosions this month, we’re previewing the steampunk events line-up at SDCC here. For those who can’t attend this year, tons of other events are happening across the US and around the world, including steampunk at Comic Con in Paris, a brand-new event in Cambridge, England, the re-creation of a fantastical Moroccan street market in Salt Lake City, and Tokyo’s vision of a futuristic Wild, Wild East meeting the West.
Thanks go out to Kevin Steil the Airship Ambassador for his recs. As always, if we missed out on your event, feel free to drop some info in the comments. People interested in showcasing their event here for next month can email me at
with the deets by July 15th.
All descriptions are taken from the event’s website or Facebook unless stated otherwise.

Witty Women of Steampunk—Date: Thursday, July 18th Time: 11 AM—12 PM Room: 5AB
Corsets, werewolves, airships, robots, women in pants! Steampunk is all this and more. While the Victorian era was one marked by constraint, adding a sci-fi twist has allowed women creators to reimagine this world and loosen those cultural corset strings. They are exploring how liberating, sexy and adventurous the age of steam can be. Robin Blackburn (The League of S.T.E.A.M.), Anina Bennett (Boilerplate: History’s Mechanical Marvel), Kaja Foglio (Girl Genius), Jaymee Goh (Silver Goggles), Claire Hummel (Bioshock: Infinite) and moderator Dina Kampmeyer (LadySteam) will discuss literature, fashion, romance, adventure, multiculturalism and more.
Steampunk 101—Date: Friday, July 19th Time: 10—11 AM Room: 25ABC
With the explosion of steampunk’s popularity, many are still wondering; what exactly is steampunk? Fashion trend? Literary genre? Lifestyle? Anything involving corsets and goggles? International experts in the field will delve into the origins of the movement, the active community that has formed around it, and what we can learn about the future by looking to the past. Come hear from Nick Baumann (Creative Director, The League of S.T.E.A.M.), Professor Elemental (Chap Hop Emcee), Brian Kesinger (Disney story artist and creator of Otto and Victoria), Paige Gardner Smith (Costume artist), John Strangeway (Steampunk Boba Fett) and moderator Dina Kampmeyer (LadySteam).
Steampunk As A SUPER-Culture Date: Friday, July 19th Time: 5—6PM Room: 29A
Steampunk began as a literary movement often described as “Victorian Science Fiction”. Certainly the written word is a key ingredient, but Steampunk is showing signs of becoming a multicultural/multidimensional fandom. Hosted by Veronique Chevalier. Panelists are: Paul Guinan (Creator of Boilerplate: History of a Victorian Era Robot, the basis for an upcoming feature by JJ Abrams); Brian Kesinger (Disney Artist & author of Walking Your Octopus); Trevor Crafts (Executive Producer, Lantern City), & Thomas Willeford (Founder, Brute Force Studios & author of Steampunk Gear, Gadgets, and Gizmos: A Maker’s Guide to Creating Modern Artifacts).
Come join us for drinks, eats and good conversation during SDCC. This is a chance to meet other steampunks and enjoy each others company while taking a breather from SDCC. We’ll be meeting at the Gaslamp’s premier gastropub, The Hopping Pig after the evening steampunk panel (ending at 6 pm) and staying until 8 or after. Since this is outside of the con, no convention badges necessary! Steampunk dress & cosplay optional but welcome.
And, while not at SDCC, this is certainly relevant to those attending that week:
