Hidden Treasures, Passionate Encounters

I adore a bit of mystery in a romance novel. Secret identities, shadowy villains, hidden treasures – you name it! I simply love it when a hero and heroine must work together to triumph over a challenge.

What do I love most about that shared endeavor? Why, the opportunity for delectable dalliance, of course! Chasing after elusive prey or unearthing a cache of valuables offers a dashing hero and daring heroine any number of shadowed alleyways and candlelit corners in which to come to know each other quite intimately. But even more than that, while putting their minds together to best a foe or find a treasure, a lord and a lady can discover their hearts deliciously entwined too.

In my novella, A LADY’S WISH, Lady Patricia Morgan receives a mysterious letter and sets out on the road in search of a buried treasure—not to mention a bit of much-needed adventure. Who should she meet on that road but Captain Nikolas Acton, a war hero just returned to England, and the man she spent one glorious day with years ago and could never forget. Nik has received instructions from an old army friend to find a hidden treasure, and is staggered to find instead the woman who promised him her heart then disappeared without trace. Struggling to resist the passion that burns as hot as ever between them, Nik and Patricia just might discover that their reunion is much more than mere coincidence, and the treasure they seek more than either of them dared to dream.

Join the Scavenger Hunt today and help me celebrate my two newest books, A LADY’S WISH and CAPTURED BY A ROGUE LORD, Book #2 in my Rogues of the Sea Trilogy (in stores now!).

Thank you for your post, Katharine. Sounds like you have a winner. There must be good reasons why Avon picked “A Lady’s Wish” to launch its Impulse line.

I certainly agree with what you said about how mystery and adventure reinforce romance. What’s more, I can think of a few other reasons.

First, danger, threats, and fear make people, both real and fictional, take actions they wouldn’t ordinarily even think about. That includes seizing chances at love and sex when they realize their lives can suddenly and easily end. They might not get another opportunity to do this, or anything else. The threat of death makes life, and the sweetest part of it, more precious.

Second, perilous situations and events are great ways to reveal character. That includes extremes of emotions. We get to see individuals at both their best and their worst. The ways they stand up to obstacles, fear, and danger, or fail to, brings out aspects they didn’t know they had.

All this makes for fascinating reading. It deepens and makes more meaningful whatever romantic interactions are going on. It leads to intriguing complications and a greater sense of verisimilitude. Such characters become more vivid. Readers can easily relate to them and will long remember them.

    Keep up the good work!
