Off Topic–Iditarod

I know it is ironic for someone who hates snow and cold the way I do, but I am a huge fan of sled dog racing! And no, it is not exactly Celtic ROFL but it is a March thing. The big one–the supper bowl/America’s cup/world series/Daytona 500 and everything of sled dog racing started yesterday in Alaska! I am on a list receiving daily updates and bulletins on the progress. The Weather Channel did a special awhile back about the real run across Alaska on a mercy mission to deliver medication to a stricken outpost which the Iditarod commemorates and I cried and cried over the wonderful heroic dogs!! The late Susan Butcher is a huge heroine of mine and I just had to say something about this event!! There are books on it and you can google Iditarod and get all sorts of info if you have any interest.

Love the Iditarod. I always wanted to write a book about it and a long time ago I did–of all things a Silhouette Desire. But it turned out my editor was big fan of Balto, whose metal image is in Central Park, so she told me, and she encouraged me. So I got to write Leader Of The Pack. The heroine could have won, but she stopped to save the hero’s life and so did not. But
interestingly enough, that was the first year a woman, Susan Butcher, actually did win the race. And it wasn’t her last win, either. She’s gone now, bt I greatly admired her. That’s one grueling race for dogs and humans. Jane

This sounds so interesting – I love dogs – and snow – and have always thought I’d love to be able to take part in a sled dog race.

I’ve never thought about taking part in the race, but I’ve always wanted to drive one for fun!
