Should You Write That Sex Scene?

Yes!

(Shortest guest blog ever!)

In all seriousness, I’ve heard a lot of discussion about sex. It seems to be the biggest topic when it comes to romance (other than “Are vampires in or out”).  Some people skip directly to the sex scenes to see how much they’ll like a book. Others SKIP the sex scenes entirely because they hate them.

My first book has a total of four sex scenes, I think. I didn’t think this was particularly racy, but I have been told repeatedly by some readers that my books don’t need to have that much sex.

And, well, some readers think the books aren’t sexy enough. So how do you know what level of heat works best in a story?

The easiest, shortest answer – I will always write what I think the story needs.

Not every story has to have a lingerie-clad heroine grabbing the hero by his junk and throwing him down on the floor to make sweet monkey love to him (though I am certainly not averse to stories like that, cough). I’ve written stories that had less sex in them. I’ve written stories that have no sex in them. I’ve written stories with lots and lots of sex in them. You have to go where the characters want to go. If they want to just hold hands and kiss, that’s perfectly fine.

And if they, say, want to have sex in a confessional (like they did in GENTLEMEN PREFER SUCCUBI) then you gotta do what you gotta do.

I will say that as a reader that there is nothing worse than reading the sex scene that feels like it was tacked on because the author felt like it SHOULD be there. You know what I’m talking about. The kind of sex scene where one minute the hero and heroine shake hands and meet, and the next, they’re doing it doggy-style in his apartment and it’s painfully obvious that there’s no emotional connection. Um, hello? Have they even exchanged phone numbers? In a case like that, I’d rather read no sex than read sex shoved in just to make the story ‘hot’.

My succubus books have a fair amount of graphic sex – I won’t lie. When there’s no sex going on, someone’s always thinking about that next romp in the hay. It’s part of the heroine’s nature as a succubus and it’s just how the story goes. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to write a squeaky clean succubus book.

But I kind of think the sex scenes are fun anyhow. 😉

It depends on the story. Some stories need sex scenes, others can do without.

Especially if the book is about Succubus/incubus they are creates made for sex, I would be disappointed if there wasn’t lots of sex in a book with those 2 types of creatures.

Agreed. Nothing worse than story AROUND the sex and scenes that don’t make sense. It’s a good author who knows when to go all out and when to keep it at a hot glance. 🙂

Hi Everyone – thanks for having me here today!

Wilma – Absolutely right, it depends on the story. I think no one should shy away from showing emotional intimacy. 🙂

Kristina – I felt the same way – if you write about a succubus or incubus, you should definitely show that aspect of their existence. Or else, why write about them? We’d be terribly disappointed to see a vampire that never drank blood, after all.

i just love all your books. i don’t think i can pick just one scene but it has to be the love scenes.
