Every author has their routine—some are night owls, and some are morning people and some can just crank out great prose whenever they have a minute. Me—I’m a morning person, and a coffee person. You might say that I start my day with a little coffeetime romance!
If I’m on deadline, then I’ll get up at the ungodly hour of 5 am to get started. Otherwise, I’ll get up around 6-ish. I love the morning for writing—it’s quiet, no one calls or emails, and I’m still a little bit dreamy. Oh, and the coffee. I need that to write!
The other reason I start my day with writing: You never know what the day will throw at you. Trying to write romantic, loving prose after standing in line at the post office, a stressful day at work, making dinner, cleaning up, walking the dog, etc, etc…well, I’m not that talented!
I used to be a late night writer, but that all changed with the addition of my darling dog, Penelope. When she was a puppy, she yipped at 6 am on the dot, without fail, every day. I had to take her out right away, so before I knew it, I was up and awake at 6:30 and I needed something to do.
I’ve kept up this routine for years, from The Heir And The Spare to my latest, A Groom Of One’s Own. My new book is the first in my Regency-set Writing Girls series, about four girls who write for The London Weekly, the most popular newspaper in town.
A quick synopsis: Newspaper columnist Sophie Harlow is reporting on the duke of Hamilton and Brandon’s wedding to Lady Clarissa, who is falling for a visiting Prince, while Sophie is in love with the duke, who refuses to jilt his betrothed, even though he’s falling for the scandalous Writing Girl. Whew!  It’s a love quadrangle and a comedy.
What a way to start every day! Coffee, scandal, true love and romance!

14 years agoHi Maya, really enjoyed your post!
I alas am not a writer, but I do work from home (web/graphic designer) so totally get the stressful times dousing the creativity a bit. I tend to be more of a night time person. Well who am I kidding I’m a every hr person fit in and shift what I can. As a single mom who also homeschool’s though nights seem to be the quietest around here.
A Groom of One’s Own sounds like such a good read! It is on my wishlist. Can’t wait to be able to get it.

14 years agoCongrats on the new release, Maya. I’m not a morning person and wish I could change my work hours, but coffee definitely helps me stay awake.

14 years agoHi Maya!
Congrats on the release of A Groom of One’s Own! I’m looking forward to getting a copy.
I’m definitely a morning person. I’m usually up by 6am (having two early rising dogs helps). We take an early walk then I’m ready to work. My mind seems to be at its clearest in the am.

14 years agoI’m a morning person, too. I like to get started writing with cup of coffee in hand around 5am or whenever I wake up. I’m fresh from dreamland and haven’t been hit yet by any distractions of the day. It’s my most productive time. Afternoons are good for promo activities and catching up on email. Glad to see there’s another early bird out there.

“I do not care for episodes of disruptive or highly emotional behavior,” he remarked.
I thought, “Make him pay!” 🙂 I hope you do. Sounds good!
