Interview with Tarah Scott

Hello Tarah and welcome to Coffee Time Romance. Why don’t we sit down in our cozy recliners and share a hot cup of java. We want to get to know a little more about author, Tarah Scott. I know I am anxious to get to know about the talented author.

Ohh, love these recliners. Thanks so much for having me! I love visiting with everyone at Coffee Time Romance.

I am sure the readers are eager to hear about your latest, The Pendulum, Legacy of the Celtic Brooch.  I love the character of Lady Airin and how you made her strong and robust, yet also showed her tender side in situations. I liked the way you depicted the era, and everything about that time; you made things most visual for this reader to get a good idea of everything that was transpiring. The dialogue was wonderfully done as well. Great writing, with some intrigue, action, and chemistry, to make this a good read.

Gosh, thanks so much for the lovely compliments, Cherokee. I’m pleased you enjoyed the story, and that I was able to capture the era for you. That’s one of the huge challenges of writing historical romance.

Can you fill us in on a bit more about the premise and how Lady Airin and Sir Deryll developed within the story?

How about if I start with a short blurb?

Two men.
Two murderers.
Two demands for the promised payment of marriage.
Murder, deceit, and fraud pull Lady Airin Keith between these men.
Which one will bed her, claim her…own her?

Lady Airin Keith must prove the guilt of the man she believes murdered her sister. But there are strange circumstances surrounding her sister’s death that Airin hasn’t yet come to terms with. The Pendulum: Legacy of the Celtic Brooch takes Airin on a journey of discovery and forgiveness—not just for those she holds responsible, but for herself as well. Of course, what better way to come to terms with life than with the help of a knight in shining armor…or not so shining armor, as Airin believes to be the case with Sir Deryll?

Was it hard for you to come up with the characters and their descriptions?

HA!! Coming up with characters and their descriptions is the easy part. Making that work toward the personalities, well, that’s the real challenge.

What would you say is important to you, characters, plot, or intimacy?

All three! Of course, for romance, characters are paramount. Plot is great. We must see our characters doing and being, and becoming more than what they are at our story’s beginning. But the plot must serve character, which of course involves intimacy. If any of these three elements falter, the story suffers.

Can you tell us, what you think makes a good writer?

To be a good writer, a person must be willing to dig deep inside themselves. You can’t be afraid of making yourself vulnerable. Being vulnerable, being willing to expose the very heart of being human, is what being a writer is all about.

Generally, how long does it take you to write a book?

Depends on the book. Longer, more complicated books can take a couple of years to write. Novellas, anywhere from 3-6 months.

What time of the day is more productive for you, to do your writing, morning or night?

These days, mornings are more productive. If possible, I write before my daughter gets up, and before the worries of the day creep past my writer’s muse.

Can you tell us something about you that make you unique?

ROFL. That’s a loaded question if ever I heard one. I’d say one of my most unique qualities is my sharp sense of humor. I have been told I’m a never ending source of amusement for my friends. Of course, that’s oftentimes by accident. Heh heh.

You are called upon, at a school, to tell those interested in becoming an author, all the ins and outs of good writing skills and getting published. Name three important elements in writing, publishing and promoting that you would give them.

Oh! Only three? ROFL. Good writing skills are a result of practice, practice, practice. Publishing is about perseverance. Promotion is about understanding that readers feel an intimate connection with writers they like. If you let readers get to know you, and you keep writing good books, they’ll stay loyal to you for life.

Is there a favorite vacation spot that you enjoy visiting?

In recent years, my vacations have been within driving distance. I have a good friend who lives in Richmond, Virginia, and I love driving down there to spend time with her. Virginia is lovely country, and it’s warmer than New York!

Do you have a favorite children’s story?

Alice In Wonderland. I’ve always been fascinated with the idea of falling into another world or experiencing states of consciousness. I liked the recent remake of the movie with Johnny Depp. (Another amazing actor.)

You wake up one morning to learn you are on a different planet. It is similar to earth in every way for the exception; the people are all the same. You feel like you are in a Twilight Zone episode. You learn you can return to earth immediately or spend the day learning about the strange sect. What would be your choice?

Oh! I would definitely stay for the day and learn about them. That would be far too interesting an experience to resist.

Okay, let’s have some fun: I know everyone has a favorite movie and actor, I know I do. Why not share yours with us?

My favorite movie is It’s a Wonderful Life. Corny, I know, but I can’t resist that movie. Favorite actor, I have quite a few. One favorite is John Travolta. ROFL. I’m dating myself with this one, but he’s so diverse and a consummate actor. I also love Meryl Streep and Reese Witherspoon.

Name three things you look for in a companion or friend.

Patience. Heh heh. Intelligence and, most important, a great sense of humor. They’ll need it, being friends with me.

Thank you, Tarah for being with us today. I wish you the best in your writing and many sales.

Thanks so much, Cherokee. As always, it’s great to be at Coffee Time Romance!
